Investment Casting

Investment casting improves the quality of parts by using high-grade alloys for cast parts. A wax pattern is first used to form an expendable ceramic mold which is then filled with molten metal to produce the final product. This process allows for complex designs with intricate features and fills, such as through holes, slots, or complicated profiles. Investment casting allows companies to save money over other manufacturing processes that use machining to produce finished pieces.

This method can also be used to produce high dimensional accuracy – tolerances as low as 0.003 in (0.076 mm) can be as thin as 0.015 in (0.4 mm). This flexibility allows investment casting to be used in aerospace, medical devices, sports equipment, etc.

Zetwerk is Your Source for Precision Investment-Cast Components

Zetwerk provides high quality investment cast components produced using a range of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. We also perform necessary secondary operations on the cast parts such as finish machining, heat treatment, and surface treatment.

Zetwerk can work with a variety of materials, such as carbon steel, low-alloy steel, and stainless steel grades, in addition to a wide variety of non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, brass, and bronze.

Zetwerk does both gravity-fed and vacuum casting.

Zetwerk is ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D certified. Our investment casting plants are IATF 16949:2016, ISO 13485:2016, PED 2014/68/EU, and AD 2000 W0 certified.

Aluminum Tooling or Wax Pattern Prototyping

We typically use a machined aluminum tool as the negative of the final metal part and inject wax into the mold to create a pattern – a positive of the final metal part.

Alternatively, the pattern can also be 3D printed. A 3D printed wax pattern allows for the production of parts with complex geometry/designs and undercuts which otherwise may not be possible to mold using an aluminum tool.

Secondary Operations and Additional Services for Investment-Cast Components

Zetwerk can support the following secondary operations on investment-cast components:

Machining: Zetwerk has the capabilities to machine cast parts to ensure tight dimensional tolerances that cannot be achieved as-cast.

Heat Treatment: Zetwerk can heat treat the cast parts to achieve the desired mechanical properties.

Surface Finishing: Zetwerk offers various surface finishing options like pickling and passivation, electroplating, polishing, powder coating, or ultrasonic cleaning, as per the specifications.

Assembly Services: Zetwerk provides assembly services. Zetwerk can procure additional parts like fasteners and/or other components that are involved in the assembly if required.

Quality Control and Inspection Services: Zetwerk offers a variety of in-house/third-party casting quality inspection and product testing services. It is important to ensure that engineering specifications are met. We provide testing services such as chemical composition testing, tensile strength testing, hardness testing, and impact testing.

Some of the testing services we provide are chemical composition testing, tensile strength testing, hardness testing, impact testing, dye penetrant testing, magnetic particle inspection, and radiography inspection.

Zetwerk offers project management throughout the manufacturing process. After you create a PO, our team will guide you through each step. They will keep you up-to-date with the information you need to monitor production and share project information with internal stakeholders.

Investment Casting Tooling Design

Once we receive your purchase order we’ll do a formal Design For Manufacturability (DFM) review with you and your team to ensure the design is optimized. This step will help prevent issues, reduce production time, and ensure the investment casted components meet your design and performance criteria.

Optimizing the design through a DFM is an often overlooked step; addressing this before manufacturing will save time and costs as well as enabling you to get to market faster.

FAIR / PPAP Approval

A First Article Inspection (FAIR or PPAP) and report is a part of a robust product development program. It is also critical to conduct detailed reviews to avoid out of tolerance components and rework of the tool. Zetwerk’s pre-production process incorporates this essential step, giving you complete confidence in the parts you’ll receive.

ZMI – Zetwerk Managed Inventory for JIT Deliveries

Global events of the early 2020s have demonstrated the importance of inventory management and supply chain resiliency. The traditional approach to JIT strains your ability to react to market or order fluctuations. Having a globally connected supply partner is an effective way to build resiliency and multi-source supply.

Zetwerk is your one-stop solution for complete end-to-end contract manufacturing and distribution. We provide:

  • Unlimited manufacturing capacity, which decreases risk and improves your ability to respond to demand fluctuations
